By doing your grooming yourself, you are going to save a lot of money. If you are not skilled in the use of clippers, then regular maintainance will keep your grooming costs down. Regular brushing with a slicker or brush and regular bathing will reduce having to spend a lot of money at the groomers with an over matted and dirty dog.
Purchase combs, brushes, clippers and maintain your dog’s coat yourself. If you are not sure what combs or brushes to buy, ask your local pet store and groomer. Often people have purchased the correct equipment but do not know how to use it properly so ask your groomer to show you the proper technique.
If you have trouble keeping your dog still, ask a dog trainer for some tips or send me an email to messy_pawz1@bigpond.com
If you need to use a groomer shop around - is a mobile one cheaper? They have much lower overheads than a shop. Also will someone starting out be cheaper?
Do you need to have your dog show-clipped or will a pet clip do. A pet clip is cheaper.
Don't allow your dog to wear his or her dog coat all day. This will cause matting in their coat and cost you more at the groomers.
Diet can effect shedding so review the amount of processed food your dog is having and shift to a raw food diet.
Use damp cloth or paper towel sprayed with an essential oil to help reduce shedding when your dog’s inside the house. Wiping it over your dog’s coat will help reduce the amount of dust and hair floating in the air.
If you are looking to purchase a puppy or rehome an older dog, ask about what grooming costs you will have to face in the future. Nearly all puppies have short curly coats but they grow longer in time and need extensive grooming. As well, some dog breeds, such as Jack Russells or Staffordshire Terriers, with short coats lose a lot of hair which will cost you in cleaning bills too.
Some dogs have more of a 'doggie' smell too but this can be controlled with diet. Many commercial dog foods contain additives and chemicals that are harmful to your dog and will leech out of his or her coat. To maintain a healthy dog smell switch your dog to a more natural diet.
